1 | $309.97 | Rokland | |
| 5.8 dBi fiberglass omni, 915 MHz verifiedN-male · 32 in | 2 U-bolts + bracket included, no cable included. N-male mates straight into the arrestor — no adapter. | 1 | $42.97 | Rokland | |
| RAK12501 GNSS module HOLDQuectel L76K · antenna incl. | UART-only → needs WisBlock slot A; nothing published says whether the RAK10721 exposes it. Email Rokland first. Build runs fine on a hard-coded lat/lon without it. | 1 | $13.97 | Rokland | |
| PolyPhaser GT-NFF-AL surge arrestor verifiedN f/f bulkhead · DC–6 GHz · 20 kA | Gas discharge, IP67. Mounts at the antenna bracket so the whole RF chain is ~3 ft (≈0.4 dB) instead of 60 ft down the tower. | 1 | $76.99 | Mouser | |
| LMR-240 jumper, 3 ft estN-male → RP-SMA male | Arrestor → node. The node port is RP-SMA female, so the cable end is RP-SMA male. | 1 | ~$14 | Amazon | |
| Bonding tail est#6 AWG · lugs · stainless hardware | Arrestor + enclosure into the tower's existing bond. Not a ground-rod kit — the tower is already grounded. | 1 | ~$18 | Amazon | |
| Weatherproofing estbutyl mastic · UV vinyl tape · UV zip ties | 3M 2228 or Coax-Seal on every connector; connector corrosion is the #1 field failure. | 1 | ~$28 | Amazon |
Why this one: same radio as the DIY route, but the weatherproofing, charge circuit and battery are somebody else's engineering problem, it's in stock in the US (no tariff surprise), and it has a warranty. It costs ~3–4× the DIY box.

| Radio: RAK WisBlock Meshtastic Starter Kit ~RAK4631 + RAK19007 base · US915 · RAK official store | Same nRF52840 + SX1262 radio as the $310 kit. Deep-sleep 3–5 µA; the base board has a battery JST and a 5 V solar input with its own charger, so no separate charge board.Alt, cheaper: XIAO nRF52840 + Wio-SX1262 kit (~$25–30) — also MeshCore-supported, but then you need the CN3791 charger line below. | 1 | $35–45 | AliExpressXIAO altsearch | |
| Waterproof box, IP67 ABS, clear lid ~≈200 × 150 × 100 mm · hinged · stainless latches | Clear lid lets you see the status LED from the ground with binoculars. Get one with an internal mounting plate. Three penetrations: N bulkhead, PG7 for the panel lead, optional vent. | 1 | $8–16 | AliExpresssearch | |
| Solar panel, 6 V 10 W mono ~ETFE/epoxy, waterproof, bare lead | 10 W × ~3 Dec sun-h × 0.6 = ~18 Wh/day vs 6.2 Wh load — same margin as the prebuilt kit. Mount 50–60° from horizontal, facing south. | 1 | $14–20 | AliExpresssearch | |
| Battery: 2 × 18650, 3400–3500 mAh + 2-slot holder ~wired in parallel → ~7 Ah / 25 Wh | 25 Wh ÷ 6.2 Wh/day = 4 days of zero sun (the RAK kit's 56 Wh gives 9). Go to 3 cells if you want parity.⚠ Buy the cells from a US vendor (18650BatteryStore / Liion Wholesale) — AliExpress 18650 capacity claims are routinely fake. Holder from AliExpress is fine. | 1 | $14–18 | Cells (US)holder | |
| CN3791 MPPT solar charger board, 6 V ~only for the XIAO route | Unticked by default — the RAK19007 base charges from its own solar header. Needed if you go XIAO (no charger on board). Add a 1 A polyfuse between battery and load either way. | 1 | $2–4 | AliExpresssearch | |
| 5.8–8 dBi fiberglass omni, 868/915 MHz ~N-female (or N-male — check the listing) | The single biggest range lever. AliExpress gain numbers are optimistic; treat "8 dBi" as ~5–6. Confirm the connector gender before ordering the jumper. | 1 | $15–25 | AliExpresssearch | |
| N f/f gas-tube lightning arrestor ~DC–3 GHz · 90 V GDT · bulkhead | Cheap-import arrestor: works, but the GDT quality is unknown and it's the part standing between a lightning strike and everything else. The PolyPhaser ($77, US) is the honest upgrade on a 55 ft tower. | 1 | $8–12 | AliExpresssearch | |
| u.FL → N-female bulkhead pigtail ~15–20 cm · 1.13/1.37 mm coax | RAK4631/XIAO LoRa port is u.FL (IPEX). The bulkhead goes through the box wall — that's your antenna port. Keep it short. | 1 | $3–5 | search | |
| LMR-240 jumper, N-male → N-male, 1 m ~ | Box bulkhead → arrestor → antenna. (If the antenna is N-female, you need one more N-male jumper or a N m/m barrel — check gender first.) | 1 | $7–11 | AliExpresssearch | |
| PG7 cable glands, 10-pack ~nylon · IP68 | Panel lead entry, bottom of the box. Silicone around every gland. | 1 | $2–4 | search | |
| Mounting + weatherproofing ~U-bolts/hose clamps · butyl tape · UV zip ties · 1 A polyfuse · silicone | Stainless hardware. Butyl + UV tape on every RF joint. Conformal-coat the PCB if you're feeling thorough. | 1 | $12–18 | search | |
| Bonding tail est#6 AWG · lugs — buy local | Same as the Rokland build; hardware store, not a 3-week parcel. | 1 | ~$18 | Amazon |
What you give up vs the prebuilt kit: ~half the battery autonomy unless you add cells, an unrated charge circuit (RAK19007's is fine; TP4056 boards are not), your own IP67 workmanship, and a 2–4 week wait. What you gain: ~$350 and a box you can open.
Traps We Already Fell In
1 · "The RAK kit has GPS"
It doesn't. GPS is the separate RAK12501 (RAK replaced the RAK12500 in July 2025). It's UART-only and needs WisBlock slot A — unconfirmed on the RAK10721. Holding it blocks nothing.
2 · "3.7 V LiFePO₄ 12 Ah"
Not a real part — LiFePO₄ cells are 3.2 V. The kit's battery is a RAK9154 Li-ion, 5.2 Ah / 56 Wh. Enough for 9 days of dark.
3 · "Ships with MeshCore"
Everything ships Meshtastic. Flash RAK_4631_repeater, then change the admin password from password before it goes up — remote admin over the mesh is the only way in afterwards. No Bluetooth on repeater firmware.
4 · "RP-SMA → SMA adapter"
Wrong chain. The antenna is N-male, the arrestor is N-female both sides: antenna → arrestor → one jumper → node. Nothing to adapt.
5 · Preset first, then CR
Select the USA/Canada preset, then change only coding rate to 8. Any other edit flips the node to "Custom" and it silently stops hearing the local mesh.
6 · 50 W panel + 20 Ah
Someone scoped that. It's ~5× oversized for a 0.26 W load — $150–200 of parts that would never be used.
Build Order
- Order. Rokland: 6 of 7 lines, hold the GPS. AliExpress: everything above, cells from a US vendor.
- Flash MeshCore repeater firmware on the bench; set preset → CR 8, name, admin password, lat/lon. Bench-soak 24 h on the panel.
- DIY only: drill the box (N bulkhead, PG7 gland), mount plate, wire panel → base → battery, polyfuse, silicone every hole, 24 h cure.
- Confirm the T1000-E hears it from the house, then from the far pasture.
- Climb weekend (with the DisneyFarm AP): antenna at the top, arrestor at the bracket, node right below, bonding tail to the tower. Butyl every joint.
- Repeater admin over the mesh from the app — verify the password is no longer the default.
