Claude's Fable 5 model is free until July 7. Most people will spend that window chatting with it.
I pointed it at my homelab backlog instead — and treated it like an operator, not a chatbot.
In two marathon sessions it: • Audited every host, container, Raspberry Pi, and automation on my network • Found and documented 70+ running services — many with zero documentation • Stood up a system that now audits itself weekly and emails me if anything drifts back to undocumented • Made Pi-hole my network-wide DNS, then diagnosed and fixed the latency it introduced • Upgraded my self-hosted search engine and future-proofed its config • Then produced a prioritized plan of 30+ more improvements — and wrote the exact prompts to execute each one
But the real lesson wasn't the task list. It was the strategy.
The smartest use of a free premium AI isn't clearing your backlog. It's spending that strong reasoning on the things that make you need a premium AI LESS afterward — fixing the local, self-hosted agents so they carry more of the load on their own once the free window closes.
Use the big brain to make your small brains smarter.
If you've got a free trial on a capable model, don't waste it on small talk. Point it at your biggest, ugliest backlog — and at the systems that will outlast the trial.
