My wife and I finally have live conversations during the workday — and neither of us is typing on a phone.
The problem was simple and stupid: I'm at work, quietly at a desk where texting is easy. April is home running the house, farm and a 3 year old (not quite in school) — hands full, phone perpetually in another room. By the time she found it to read my text and roll her eyes and say "I'm not responding to that" or thumb out a reply, the moment had passed. For me, not acceptable. Time to fix that!
HOW IT WORKS Her side (voice): April says "Alexa, tell Jess to pick up milk on the way home." to any Echo in the house. A small Python script on my home server polls the Alexa voice-history API once a minute, catches the trigger phrase, and posts the transcript straight into my private Discord channel and I get a pop up on my laptop and cell. She never touches a phone. It even handles the two-turn flow where Alexa asks "What's your message?" My side (text): I type a reply in Discord from my desk. My home-lab AI assistant pushes it out as an announcement to all five Echos and the puck in the Barn. April hears my words out loud, wherever she is in the house or Barn.
THE TIMELINE • Thinking of the idea: ~30 seconds. It was a shower thought typed as one sentence. • Building it: under an hour, and none of that hour was mine. • Testing it: same morning. Her spoken message hit my Discord, I typed back "make it a big boy burrito," and every speaker in the house announced it. No one thought it was hilarious. mehh
Idea at breakfast, live conversation with my wife before lunch. Round trip: about 60 seconds per message.
Why it actually matters: she talks, I type — each of us gets the interface that fits where we are. No hunting for a phone with farm gloves on. No stepping out of the office to take a call. And the bridge surfaces things I'd have missed entirely, like the honey-do list April announced to the whole house at 8:41 AM while I was gone.
Sometimes the best home-lab project isn't the GPU cluster or the robot mower. It's the one that makes the person you live with say "wait, that actually works?"
